Chemical Flush
What is a chemical flush?
A powerflush is a cleansing process in which heating systems are forcibly cleansed through the use of a pump which uses water at high velocity but low pressure so that no physical damage is done to the system. The process aims to remove build ups of sludge, rust and other debris.
Why might my system need one?
Symptoms such as cold patches at the bottom of radiators, parts of a system that no longer heat correctly, or odd noises produced by the boiler once it heats up, can all indicate a chemical flush treatment is needed. A treatment will boost the effectiveness of your heating system and with an inhibitor added to central heating regularly during its annual service, protect it from rust and scale, and prolong its life, saving you money in the long term.
How long does it take?
A few hours depending on system size and amount of debris.
Who requires a system to be chemically flushed?
Boiler manufacturers require it as the minimum standard required, and legislation and best practices recognise that in order to effectively clean a system, a chemical cleanser ought to be used.
How often is it recommended?
A correctly maintained heating system which is regularly treated with a corrosion inhibitor, should work efficiently for a number of years. In general, heating systems will only require a chemical clean when the heating engineer indicates it is necessary, as the kind of debris and the amount will depend on the type of system, its age, and how well it has been maintained. You should be aware however, that new systems can easily succumb to debris during after installation.

Why might my system need one?
Most central heating problems relate directly or indirectly to sludge or lime scale in your system. Eliminating this makes problems easier to diagnose, helps prevent future problems and makes your system operate more efficiently and economically. It is recommended that an older system is power flushed to remove all debris from the old system before a new boiler is fitted.
Who requires a system to be power flushed?
- Most boiler insurance schemes want your system power flushed as standard.
- Manufacturers of your boiler, especially within its warranty.
Who requires a system to be power flushed?
- Cold areas on radiators e.g. at the bottom
- Excessive noise from the boiler or the heating system pump
- Discoloured water when you bleed the radiators
- Heating is slow to warm up
- Cloudy tap water (limescale in system)
- Some radiators struggle to heat up as well as others
- Radiators cold but pipes are hot
- Boiler regularly shuts down and needs restarting
- No water escapes when you bleed a radiator
- Noisy radiators and or / boiler
- Small leaks in radiators
How often is it recommended?
If you carry out regular professional servicing and maintenance annually, then a preventative Powerflush should only be necessary every 5-6 years to clear debris and prevent significant blockages from taking hold.
How long does it take?
It depends greatly on how much sludge is in your system and system layout. Generally, half a day for a small system and a full day for a large one.
Magna Clean
What is a MagnaClean?
A MagnaClean is a device which can be attached to your heating system in which the water in the system passes through the unit and around the central magnet attracting the magnetic contaminants .The device can be isolated and the contaminants flushed out or off the core by sliding the magnet out of the sleeve (removing the magnetic influence). This process will be done every boiler service or is very easy for you to do yourself.
What benefits does it give my system?
Magnaclean offers added protection to your boiler against damage, helps it last longer, run more efficiently, reduces the risk of central heating breakdowns, and will give you substantial savings on central heating maintenance as well as extending the life of the heat exchanger and system pump.
A cleaner system means that your hot water flows at a higher pressure, your house heats up faster, you will use less energy, saving money. (It is estimated a Magna clean can cut heating energy bills by up to 6% a year*) and your heating system will run much more efficiently.
Who requires a system to be fitted with a MagnaClean?
Boiler manufacturers now require the installation of an in line system magnetic filter to validate their warranties on new boilers.
How long does it take?
A couple of hours usually.
